Connecticut is celebrating Tuesday after becoming the first US state to pass GMO Labeling in to law. This landmark event has sparked a wave of support from around the US as a number of other states aim to follow Connecticut over the next year. The bill received bipartisan support, passing the Senate unanimously and winning a 134-3 vote in the House.

The bill was amended to be stronger last weekend – as GMO Free CT stated on their Facbook page; “the bill was re-amended by the Senate on Saturday and was approved today by the House. The trigger  is now four states (i.e four other states have to pass similar legislation before bill is acted on) and the population size was reduced. The biggest amendment the Senate made, and by far the most important, was the removal of the exemption for farmers making less than $1.5 million dollars which really challenged the integrity of the bill. This is a compromise, but one that strengthens the integrity of the bill now. This will truly help other states move forward which will assist us with the trigger.”

Unapproved GMO Wheat Seeds Being Investigated By U.S. Search Team

WASHINGTON, SEOUL June 3 (Reuters) - The United States has expanded its search team in Oregon as it hunts for the source of unapproved genetically modified wheat found growing wild on a farm there in April. An Agriculture Department spokesman told Reuters on Monday that a team of 15 is now collecting evidence and information, versus nine investigators on the ground last week. He said there are "no indications that there is any GE (genetically engineered) wheat in commerce."

Preliminary tests on U.S. wheat and wheat flour imports by South Korea did not detect any GE wheat; final results were expected on Wednesday. The country's Ministry of Food and Drugs said it planned to test all U.S. shipments.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders may have lost a few battles, but he’s not giving up the war against Monsanto. Less than a week after the U.S. Senate defeated Sanders’ proposed amendment to the food bill, which would have given states the right to require that manufacturers of GMO foods label their products accordingly, the Vermont Senator said he remains unbowed.

Food Companies Seeking Ingredients That Aren't Gene Altered

Nytimes, By: Stephanie Strom, 05/26/2013

Food companies big and small are struggling to replace genetically modified ingredients with conventional ones. Pressure is growing to label products made from genetically modified organisms, or “G.M.O.” In Connecticut, Vermont and Maine, at least one chamber of the state legislature has approved bills that would require the labeling of foods that contain genetically modified ingredients, and similar legislation is pending in more than two dozen other states.

This weekend, rallies were held around the globe against producers of genetically altered ingredients, and consumers are threatening to boycott products that are not labeled. And so, for many businesses, the pressing concern is just what it will take to gain certification as non-G.M.O.

Monsanto shares fall as South Korea joins pause in wheat imports

Washingtonpost.com, By: Steven Mufson, 05/31/2013

Investors drove down the price of Monsanto shares by 4 percent on Friday as South Korea joined Japan in suspending imports of U.S. wheat after an unapproved strain of genetically modified wheat was discovered in a field in eastern Oregon. The strain of wheat, designed to resist harmful effects from Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, was never commercially developed by the St. Louis-based agriculture giant in large part because wheat growers did not want to risk retaliation from their biggest export markets.

Fields used to test new crop varieties are burned and checked for surviving crops. So the mysterious appearance of the Monsanto wheat has raised questions about how the strain traveled there and whether it is lurking in the commercial wheat crop.

GM Wheat

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced Wednesday that test results of plant samples from an Oregon farm indicate the presence of genetically engineered (GE) glyphosate-resistant wheat plants. Further testing by USDA laboratories indicates the presence of the same GE glyphosate-resistant wheat variety that Monsanto was authorized to field test in 16 states from 1998 to 2005.

APHIS launched a formal investigation after being notified by an Oregon State University scientist that initial tests of wheat samples from an Oregon farm indicated the possible presence of GE glyphosate-resistant wheat plants.

GMO lose Europe – victory for environmental organizations

Investigative Reporting Denmark, By: Nils Mulvad, 05/29/2013

Monsanto will halt production of genetically modified corn in all of Europe, except Spain, Portugal and Czech republic. The agribusiness multinational states not to spend any more money on trials, development, marketing, court cases or anything else to get GM corn accepted in Europe.

”In Europe Monsanto only sells GM corn in three countries. GM corn represents less than 1% of the EU’s corn cultivation by land area. Field trials are only in progress in three countries. We will not spend any more money to convince people to plant them,” states Brandon Mitchener, Public Affairs Lead for Monsanto in Europe and Middle East, in an interview with Investigative Reporting Denmark.

Media Coverage On Anti-Monsanto Protests

Naturalsociety, By: Anthony Gucciardi, 05/28/2013

The decision by the mainstream media to ignore the thousands of individuals marching down the busiest streets of major cities worldwide may be appalling, but in reality it matters very little at this point. Not only is the movement against Monsanto adding to its number each day thanks to the real alternative media and intelligent activism, but the movement as a whole is driven by an inexorable desire to push the GMO ‘food bully’ out of our food supply.

The Protests are Working: Dow’s New “Enlist” GMO Corn Delayed

Silver's picture

Naturelsociety, By: Christina Sarich

Our collective outcry of ‘NO to GMO’ is working. In hot off the press, Dow AgroSciences is still waiting for permission from regulatory bodies to allow them to plant their highly controversial new weed control system and crops called ‘Enlist.’ Ironic isn’t it – after all, we’ve enlisted the help of our friends and neighbors to stare these corporate bullies in the eye and to sit complacent no longer as our food supply is genetically modified to cause cancer, infertility, and organ failure, to kill our bees, and endanger future generations through higher infant mortality rates.

We can’t give up now; it’s starting to work. If one squeaky hinge can’t shut the door, a million of them will shut down the house, the congress, and even the USDA. As U.S. farmers buy seed for this coming season’s crops the Enlist seed has still not been given approval by the feds.
