MEDAN: A volcano in western Indonesia erupted on Thursday, unleashing a column of dark volcanic material high into the air weeks after villagers were returning home from an earlier eruption, officials said reports UNB.
The explosion at Mount Sinabung, located in North Sumatra province, shot black ash 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) into the air, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, said National Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
He said villages, farms and trees around the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot)
high rumbling volcano were covered in thick gray ash, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 3,300 people. Most were from two villages within 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) of the mountain in Karo district.
No lava or debris spewed from the volcano, and nearby towns and villages were not in danger, but authorities warned tourists to stay away from the danger zone located 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the crater, Nugroho said.
Last month, more than 15,000 people were forced to flee when the volcano rumbled to life after being dormant for three years, belching ash and smoke and igniting fires on its slopes.

Karymsky (Kamchatka): After months with probably only smaller explosive activity, a powerful vulcanian eruption took place last night (22:35 UTC), producing a 3-4 km tall ash plume rising to 20,000 ft (6 km) elevation.
The plume was observed by a helicopter pilot and on satellite imagery drifting east. About 5 hours after the eruption, the plume was 50 miles (80 km) ESE of the volcano.

Tongariro (North Island, New Zealand): During the past two weeks, GeoNet has been recording very small earthquakes beneath the volcano. The quakes were too small to be located but show up on local seismic stations.
GNS Science said the earthquakes could simply be part of the background unrest typical of most active volcanoes. However, in this case they are of interest at this time because there have been so few at Tongariro since November 2012 and potentially could signal changes occurring inside the volcano.

Volcanic activity worldwide 10 Jul 2013: Popocatépetl, White Island, Sakurajima, San Diego

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): Strong activity continues. This morning, a relatively large vulcanian-type explosion produced a plume rising to 14,000 ft (4.3 km) altitude. The the volcano continued to emit ash for several hours following the explosion.

White Island (New Zealand): GeoNet issued a new bulletin about unusual seismic activity at White Island, but mentions that there is no current eruption:
"Over the past few weeks White Island has repeatedly produced very small volcanic earthquakes. These small tremor bursts are occurring like clockwork, approximately every 70 seconds, creating a unique pattern on our earthquake drum, with hundreds of these small bursts recorded every day.

At the foot of the red planet's Giant Volcano

4 July 2013

Hundreds of individual lava flows are seen frozen in time on the flanks of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the Solar System.

The images, taken on 21 January 2013 by ESA’s Mars Express, focus on the southeast segment of the giant volcano, which towers some 22 km above the surrounding plains. This is more than double the height of Mauna Kea, the tallest volcano on Earth at 10 km, when measured from its oceanic base to summit.

Olympus Mons in context

Like Mauna Kea, Olympus Mons is a shield volcano, with gently sloping sides that extend outwards at low angles. But unlike other shield volcanoes, it has an abrupt cliff edge, or scarp, separating it from the surrounding plains.

Eruption from Popocatepétl this morning

Eruption from Popocatepétl this morning

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): A phase of strong eruptive activity has started last night and is continuing with frequent explosions that eject incandescent bombs onto the upper outer slope and create a plume of gas and ash rising 3-4 km above the volcano to flight level 250 (25,000 ft).
During 2-3 June, the rate of emissions had climbed to 3-4 per hour, and volcanic earthquakes accompanied the rise of a new batch of magma. Strong tremor started last night, when activity became more vigorous.
