The Gift of a Card

I'm eleven years old, and I like to make cards. I usually put a bracelet and drawing in the envelope along with the card, and hand it to someone.

I never hang around for people to say thank you, but sometimes my brother hides to watch their reactions. He tells me about them later.

The other day, I gave an old lady a card. Then I sat down to eat with my family. Well, she came over and gave my whole family a hug and kiss on the cheek! Before they had a chance to say "Hi" back, she sat herself down and made very friendly conversation.

I loved her. :)

Non-Human Consciousness Exists Say Experts. Now What?

by Brian Hoffstein

Have you ever considered the consciousness, or unconsciousness, of your dog? Well, a group of neuroscientists have been thinking on the subject pretty seriously, and it was announced recently that 'humans are not the only conscious beings in the universe'.

Earlier this month, some of the leading scientists from around the world congregated at the Hotel Du Vin in Cambridge to discuss the evidence that has amassed over the years. The experts reached a unanimous decision that animals – specifically mammals and birds – are in fact conscious beings. Through advancements in brain imaging techniques such as fMRI and EEG machines, the scientists concluded that animals show a sufficient degree of characteristics that indicate they are not as non-human as some had believed. The official decision was reached late into the night after the Francis Crick Memorial Conference on July 7th.

Scientists have declared a ''watch this space scenario'' for Mt Tongariro. The volcano rumbled into life at 11.50 last night, sending ash and rock a kilometre into the air, prompting a potential threat warning for central North Island regions.

The "small scale" eruption was a total surprise, with the volcano last erupting in 1897, GNS Science said.

The Perseid meteor shower of 2012 is set to peak on August 12th, when “the Earth is expected to encounter the ‘core’ of the Perseid swarm, where meteoroid concentration is densest.”

The Perseids will be easiest to view during this time because the meteors appear to separate from a part of sky near the Double Cluster in Perseus. It’s an illusion of perspective though, “since that is the direction toward which the Earth’s orbital motion carries us at this time of the meteor shower.”
