John Hourican, chief executive of markets and international banking, will leave the bank with the minimum pay-off to which he is entitled – a year’s basic salary of £700,000 – as he becomes the most senior executive at the taxpayer-backed lender to leave his job in the wake of the rate-rigging scandal.

A Bangladesh war-crimes tribunal has sentenced a senior leader of the country's biggest Islamist party to life in prison, the second verdict in trials that have reopened wounds about the country's independence war and sparked riots.
Abdul Qader Mollah, 64, was found guilty on Tuesday of charges including murder, rape, torture and arson during Bangladesh's war to break away from Pakistan in 1971.

Russell Wasendorf Sr., the founder of the bankrupt commodities firm Peregrine Financial Group Inc., was sentenced to 50 years in prison for what prosecutors said was a theft of more than $215 million from customers.
Wasendorf, 64, was sentenced today in federal court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Acting U.S. Attorney Sean Berry said in a statement. The financier used a printer, software and a post office box to create false bank statements and other documents and hide his 20-year embezzlement starting in the early 1990s, prosecutors said.

The US Federal Reserve bank has confirmed one of its internal websites was broken into by hackers after the hacktivist group Anonymous was claimed to have stolen details of more than 4,000 bank executives.
