Studies Show Low Self-Esteem & Materialism Go Hand in Hand

Researchers have found that low self-esteem and materialism are not just a correlation, but also a causal relationship where low self esteem increases materialism, and materialism can also create low self-esteem. They also found that as self esteem increases, materialism decreases. The study primarily focused on how this relationship affects children and adolescents. Lan Nguyen Chaplin (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) and Deborah Roedder John (University of Minnesota) found that even a simple gesture to raise self-esteem dramatically decreased materialism, which provides a way to cope with insecurity.

“By the time children reach early adolescence, and experience a decline in self-esteem, the stage is set for the use of material possessions as a coping strategy for feelings of low self-worth,” they write in the study, which appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research.

15 Damaging Myths About Life We Should All Stop Believing

By Elyse Gorman

1. There is a single definition of success.

And it involves an established career, large house, acceptable body shape, marriage and annual holidays.

Everyone has their own path to walk in this life, and what brings true meaning and deep fulfillment differs for all of us.

Let go of your need to fit to the status quo. Live, work, date, play, create, travel, eat, drink, move, laugh and sing in ways that feel right with your soul. That is true success.

2. Life is meant to be hard work.

Life is meant to be easy, beautiful and overflowing with moments of joy and bliss.

The more you listen to your soul and build a life that’s true to you, the more your actions will feel completely natural and effortless.

If life is a constant struggle, you’re running on empty and you dread Mondays, it’s time to take...

On Reason & Passion

And the priestess spoke again and said:
“Speak to us of Reason and Passion.”
And he answered saying:
Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against passion and your appetite.
Would that I could be the peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
But how shall I, unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers, nay, the lovers of all your elements?
Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.
If either your sails or our rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.

22 Quotes from the Most Controversial Mystic of the 20th Century

There are few mystics of the last century who were as provocative as Osho. Whether it was his fleet of Rolls Royce cars, the legal troubles his following got into in the U.S. during the 80’s or his criticism of other notable figures such as Gandhi, Osho was never far from controversy’s door. By the time of his death in 1990, he had been banned from 21 countries and gained notoriety across much of the world as an outspoken, deeply enigmatic figure, thought by his ashram to be an enlightened master and by others to be nothing more than an exceptionally manipulative cult leader. Nonetheless, his following has only grown since his passing, beginning to gain more and more traction in the west and heavily influencing certain veins of New Age thought. His philosophies, continually coming back to a core of love and unity through the loss of ego – and advocating meditation as an essential tool for accessing such states – combined with his incendiary criticism of the dominant world institutions, his offensive sense of humour and his views on sexuality continue to offer a blend that is seductive to inquiring minds. Here, then, are 22 quotes from one of the most controversial spiritual leaders of the last century, as found originally on angel fire.com.

Dreams, as we understand them, have two definitions. One being the spaces, places and faces we find while we sleep, and the other being the goals we set out to achieve in this life. Both are an integral part of the human experience, interweaving our subjective and collective realities in ways it is impossible to understand. Without them, life as we know it could not exist.  Here, then, are 10 quotes on the magnificence of dreams.

Living the “Good Life”: The American Executive and the Mexican Fisherman

An American executive was taking a much-needed vacation in a small village along the coast of Mexico. Early one afternoon, while standing on the pier looking out at the water, a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish, asking how long it him to catch them.

“Only a little while,” the Mexican replied.

The executive checked his watch. “It’s still early. Why don’t you stay out longer? You could catch a lot more.”

“This is enough,” the Mexican said, tying up the boat and beginning to get his gear together. “The fish aren’t going anywhere. There’ll be more there tomorrow.”

Ignorance is Bliss: Study Shows People Avoid Information About Complex Social Issues

The less people know about important complex issues such as the economy, energy consumption and the environment, the more they want to avoid becoming well-informed, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

And the more urgent the issue, the more people want to remain unaware, according to a paper published online in APA’s Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

“These studies were designed to help understand the so-called ‘ignorance is bliss’ approach to social issues,” said author Steven Shepherd, a graduate student with the University of Waterloo in Ontario. “The findings can assist educators in addressing significant barriers to getting people involved and engaged in social issues.”

10 Quotes on the Native American Understanding of “Ownership”

“Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

Before the Europeans arrived in North America, the Algonquian peoples that lived there – otherwise known as the Native American, First Nations and Inuit cultures – knew nothing of the idea of “ownership”. The idea that land could actually be owned was not part of their culture, and many of the practices that were built into their way of life reflected this. Young children were often encouraged to give away their most highly-valued possessions as gifts, and ceremonies during which the adults would give away all of their material items were common. Anyone who acquired a large number of possessions became of concern to the tribe.

7 Steps to Being Zen in the Office

It’s simple enough to think about being zen in the city; easy enough to imagine how calm and relaxed you could be in your 9 to 5 job and lifestyle, floating around the office like a monk and effortlessly accomplishing your goals while spreading peace of mind, but doing it, as always, is quite a different story. 5 minutes in any high-stress situation and most, if not all of the buddhist tenets we profess to hold go right out the window.

And that’s okay. It’s actually why the office is one of the very best places to put our practice to the test. Modern life is so hectic it would surely challenge even some of the greatest masters. The continual demands that are placed on us beg the proper discernment that zen can bring, if only we can stay centred enough to remain there. One of the surest ways of accomplishing this is building our ‘presence power’ in the moments that aren’t too challenging
