New Study Shows Regular Contact with Nature Reduces Crime, Increases Social Cohesion

By Christina Lavers
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

“We need the tonic of wildness… At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

The last few hundred years have seen a major shift in man’s relationship with nature. The trend has been a move away from the wild, organic, natural world towards artificial, digital, synthetic, controlled urban environments. With the advent of science during the Age of Enlightenment, man began to grasp that nature operated according to laws that through scientific investigation could be understood, and ultimately controlled and used for the benefit of humanity. The more we were able to explain, the less we perceived nature as a magical, awe-inspiring force that we were an inextricable part of. Humanity began to see itself as superior to nature, and thus a slow disconnection was set in motion — a disconnection that we are gradually beginning to understand has done us a lot more harm than good.

How to Greet Your Life

God said:

My dear children, sometimes you feel that you have had a misdeal in life. What happens when you feel neglected by life, this amazing thing called life, you look for something to blame. If life is not at your feet today, you may take this to mean that you are at fault. This is ego, dear friends. Ego preens you to be guilty. Then ego can get a good grip on you.

It so happens that you are not the centerpiece of every single day’s life as it appears in the world. Did you have the idea that you were supposed to be the headline story? Is the day supposed to beat the drums for you and blow whistles, and today is only for you?

Remember that life in the world is about contrast. Life welcomes you every day. Only every day life does not consistently announce you as King. No one is sitting down to plan out every day. What appears to you as an uphill climb is simply part of life. From the angle you view everyday life, life is not always going to appear to you as bouquet of beautiful roses. On such days, you object. “Foul,” you cry.

Better to pat life on the head and murmur:

The person who does not love himself will not be able to love anybody else, ever. The first ripple of love has to rise in your heart. If it has not risen for yourself it cannot rise for anybody else, because everybody else is farther away from you.

It is like throwing a stone in the silent lake - the first ripples will arise around the stone and then they will go on spreading to the further shores. The first ripple of love has to be around yourself. One has to love one's body, one has to love one's soul, one has to love one's totality.

And this is natural; otherwise you would not be able to survive at all. And it is beautiful because it beautifies you. The person who loves himself becomes graceful, elegant. The person who loves himself is bound to become more silent, more meditative more prayerful than the person who does not love himself.

A Quebec Judge Slammed Canada’s 'Antiquated and Ridiculous’ Marijuana Laws While Handing Down a $1 Fine

A Quebec judge has called out Canada's "ridiculous" marijuana laws, noting that lawyers and others who work in the legal system are probably getting high themselves.

Judge Pierre Chevalier recently handed down a $1 fine to man who was prosecuted for possession of 30 marijuana plants.

Mario Larouche, 46, suffers from pain stemming from a car accident; he was found in possession of the plants illegally after he tried unsuccessfully to get a medical marijuana prescription from his doctor. According to Le Droit, the crown counsel in his case requested he be jailed for 90 days and ordered to pay a $250 fine.

Chevalier dismissed that recommendation and said Larouche was the victim of a system that "does not give people access to a natural medicine that goes back centuries."

Us and Them?

Waking Times

As Inside – So Outside

Is it possible that a thread of unity ties together even the most disparate of forces?

Are we actually that different from those who we think are our mortal enemies?

Is it possible that all humanity shares one collective unconscious mind?

These are important questions, because the old weapon of ‘divide and conquer’ is exercising an almost total paralysis over society at this time. Nothing new, you might say, but the remorseless sowing of the seeds of division has once again become a key weapon in whipping up factions to accept ‘war’ as the only, and inevitable end point.

But this war-cry can only work if and when we fall prey to the corrosive indoctrination which accompanies the rhetoric of ‘us and them’. Wars would not happen if the fuel for vindictive finger-pointing was no longer so easily assimilated into our everyday lives.

Parents: What You’re Not Being Told About Autism & What Causes It

There is no single known cause for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but it is widely accepted by the scientific community that it is triggered by abnormalities in brain structure and function. This has been established in studies which illustrate the differences in the shape and structure of the autistic brain compared to those seen in the brains of neurotypical children. There is also a decent amount of evidence to support the theory that some children are born with a susceptibility to autism, but scientists have yet to identify this “trigger.” This is why researches have theorized that irregular segments of genetic code may be the root cause of autism.

In recent years, however, a wealth of information has emerged that was once never even considered. Despite the fact that the cause for autism isn’t certain, and that it’s highly unlikely researchers will ever find that ‘one’ cause of autism, scientists are now realizing that autism could be the result of the modern day human lifestyle. There are a number of significant studies that should be ringing alarm bells in the medical and scientific communities in this regard.

Innovative New Refrigerator Keeps Cold Without Electricity, Here’s How

It’s easy to take that hulking great white beast of a machine in our kitchens for granted, but for the 1.3 billion people in the world who are living without electricity, a working refrigerator is not an option. So a team of students in Canada has invented a cooling device that not only works without any electricity whatsoever, it’s also cheap and portable, making it ideal for those in remote and rural areas who struggle to keep their produce fresh.

"We thought it would be good to decrease the amount of food waste in the world, and we came up with this design because it's easy to build and the materials are relatively cheap," one of the students, Michelle Zhou from the University of Calgary, told CBC News.

Dubbed the WindChill Food Preservation Unit, the device connects an air tube to an evaporation chamber, which connects to a sealed refrigeration chamber that looks a lot like an esky, the contents of which are cooled through the process of evaporative cooling.
