Former CIA Agent to Americans: Time to Talk About What's Really Causing Terrorism

In the wake of yet another terrorist attack, a former CIA counterterrorism agent has shared her insight into what causes such tragic, intentional carnage. Amaryllis Fox spoke for the first time publicly with Al Jazeera Plus (AJ+) about terrorism, misguided narratives on why it happens, and the underlying motivators driving it — ultimately urging  Americans and those in power to adopt a different approach in comabating the ongoing violence.

“If I learned one lesson from my time with the CIA, it is this: everybody believes they are the good guy,” says Fox, who is currently “in the process of getting her CIA cover rolled back,” AJ+ reports. She is now a peace activist and runs Mulu, “an e-commerce company supporting at-risk communities around the world.”

Fox worked as a counterterrorism and intelligence official for the clandestine services during the 2000s. In her first public statement on her time there, she discussed the limitations on the American public’s perception of the war on terror:

The second path -- the pathless path, the path of enlightenment -- has a totally different revelation to make, a totally different declaration of immense value: that you are already it. "AH, THIS!" There is nowhere to go, no need to go. There is NO ONE to go. We are already enlightened. Then only can it happen in an instant -- because it is a question of awakening.

For example, if you have fallen asleep and you are dreaming... you can dream that you are on the moon. Do you think that if somebody wakes you up you will have to come back from the moon? Then it will take time. If you have already reached the moon, then you will have to come back and it will take time. The airship may not be available right now.

There may be no tickets available; it may be full. But you can be awakened because it is only a dream that you are on the moon. In fact you are in your bed, in your home: you had not gone anywhere. Just a little shaking and you are suddenly back -- back from your dreams.

The world is only a dream. We need not go anywhere; we have always been here; we ARE here and we are going to be here. But we can fall asleep and we can dream.

Heal Your Own Heart, Beloved

Messing up even serves. When you gee instead of haw, or haw instead of gee, you may know better next time.

I know your perfection. I have always known it. You may learn hit and miss, yet you are learning. Learning and growing is reason for honor and celebration. Do not think of me as a hard-nosed God. I am a God of Love.

If I were not a God of Love, how would you learn to love under all circumstances? Letting go is a form of love. Letting go of a grudge you have held doesn't say that someone has committed wrong-doing that makes him beneath you, and that you are lofty to say: "I who stand above you mercifully let your sin go this time."

Forgiveness means you let go of your judgment. You are not high and mighty. High and mighty may mean you demean yourself begrudgingly as you try to pardon another from looking down on another. To forgive is divine because you let yourself escape from a downward spiral of thinking. As you let go of negative feelings, you free yourself. It is your own hard feelings you are to let go of. You no longer insist on hammering nails of hard feelings into your heart, beloveds.

Oppose the System with Awareness

We have every reason to oppose a system designed to keep us from prospering.

We should rebel against the mental and spiritual enslavement forced onto us by people who assume they’re smarter and more entitled than the rest of humanity, and to be silent is to passively accept our own destruction.

There are a lot of things about the way the status quo is enforced that I want to communicate, but when I try, words don’t suffice.

It’s interesting that you can know something in your mind and heart yet struggle to communicate it, and words are limited when it comes to communicating deep insights.

How Is It Not Obvious?

I want so badly to tell people the world is being plundered by maniacs in power who’ve slowly conditioned the masses to never question (or even become aware of) their corporate reign.

I don’t see how it isn’t obvious, and yet, I struggle to find the right words to say about it and I could easily leave someone confused.

There’s so much to say that you may not feel like you can get it all out, and especially if you can’t find the words to say it, it can be difficult to help people become aware of something they’ve been conditioned to ridicule.

Let’s face it, the mainstream media, like CNN, Fox News etc. are great at reporting on the surface understandings of surface issues; car accidents and plane crashes, shootings and robberies; as well as reinforcing why our latest foreign war is good/necessary/the only way to peace and security. But if you really want to investigate and comprehend what is actually going on in the world, and why, you have to go past the mainstream.
