What are the Hottest and Coldest Inhabited Places in the World?

Most weather-minded people know that Death Valley, California and Vostok, Antarctica have measured the highest and lowest extreme temperatures on earth but what about the warmest and coldest inhabited places so far as average annual temperatures are concerned? Ace temperature detective Maximiliano Herrera has just finished researching this. Here are his findings.

Hottest inhabited place in the world

Although it has been widely reported that Dallol in the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia has the highest average annual temperature on earth with a figure of 34.5°C (94.1°F) the figure was derived from only seven years of data (1960-1966) by a mining company that was prospecting in the depression during those years. Actually, there were many missing months of record during those seven years and the total number of months with complete data was just 58. The location has never been permanently inhabited and there has been little or no weather data for the site since the 1960s. Nevertheless, from a climatological viewpoint the Danakil Depression probably is the hottest place on earth (in terms of average annual temperature). But for inhabited locations it would appear that Mecca (or Makah), Saudi Arabia is the warmest inhabited location on earth. Its average annual temperature is 30.7°C (87.3°F).

Snow Brings Major Impacts to the UK and Europe

Snow has continued to pester Europe over the last few days and has become a serious problem across portions of the UK and northern Europe. Transportation has endured delays, major sports events have been cancelled, and more cancellations are expected.

 

Many awoke to snow today across portions of the UK, especially across Scotland. Twitter has been inundated with pictures of castles and Scottish roadways with moderate to heavy snow cover, especially for late March.

Big Story Weather from March 19: The big news of the day was the rain and snow that moved through the Northeast with some places getting a pretty good amount of snowfall. Another big story of the day was the strong thunderstorms that moved through Texas during the overnight hours with some places getting hail. The third story of the day comes from the Northern Plains and the return of Arctic air this late in the season with many places seeing temperatures running about 20 degrees below normal for this time of year.

 

Ontario continues to battle winter weather

A low pressure system pushed into the province on Monday, bringing a wintery mix to much of southern Ontario. 

 

Some lingering flurries and breezy conditions are likely across the GTA through Wednesday, but the bulk of the system has continued to push east.

Autumn soaking for Victoria and Tasmania

A cold front and trough have brought the heaviest March rain in 12 years to parts of Victoria with Tasmania also getting a good soak. 
On Saturday night a trough and cold front swept through Victoria and Tasmania bringing widespread showers and the odd storm. Showers continued through Sunday morning in the wake in the front in brisk southerly winds.

 

Victoria's Central district had some of the highest totals, including some suburbs of Melbourne. Epping picked up 37mm making it their highest March fall in 12 years. Essendon had their highest fall since May with 31mm reaching the gauge. Melbourne city itself dodged the heaviest rain but still recorded 15mm. Although not has heavy as other areas it was the heaviest fall so far this month. The city has now recorded 16mm for March, making it the driest start to Autumn in five years. Further north, parts of Kinglake had 46mm.

 

Cyclone threatening Lord Howe Island

Sandra first formed late last week over the Coral Sea, about 1000km northeast of Mackay. She then intensified into a severe category three system while travelling east, further away from mainland Australia. Early this week she turned more southerly, towards Lord Howe Island but had weakened into a category one cyclone.

 

During this morning Sandra intensified and is likely to continue to do so during the day while closing in on Lord Howe Island. At this stage the cyclone should travel just to the east of Lord Howe while staying well to the west of Norfolk Island. By tomorrow morning the system should weaken just to the south and by tomorrow evening should weaken into a tropical depression on its way to New Zealand.

 

Tropical Cyclone Sandra Churns Well East of Australia

Tropical Cyclone Sandra was still a very strong storm, hovering at sea northwest of New Caledonia on Monday.

While far to the east of Australia, Sandra was helping to whip up rough surf and rip currents, which will be likely to last through at least Wednesday, along some Queensland beaches.

Strong Earthquake Sways Buildings in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A strong earthquake has been felt throughout Taiwan, but no casualties or damage has been reported yet.The Central Weather Bureau says the quake Thursday registered at magnitude 5.6.

The tremor struck about 23 miles (37 kilometers) north of Hualien city and it swayed buildings in the capital, Taipei. Hualien is about 110 miles (180 kilometers) southeast of Taipei.
