Tiny turbulent swirls in the solar wind

Using ESA’s Cluster quartet of satellites as a space plasma microscope, scientists have zoomed in on the solar wind to reveal the finest detail yet, finding tiny turbulent swirls that could play a big role in heating it.

Turbulence is highly complex and all around us, evident in water flowing from a tap, around an aircraft wing, in experimental fusion reactors on Earth, and also in space.

While most of the world has been focused on other things, the Ring of Fire has been quietly waking up. Over the past couple of months, there has been a steady string of noteworthy volcanic eruptions and earthquakes that have occurred along the perimeter of the Pacific Ocean. But because none of them have happened near a highly populated area, we really haven’t heard much about them in the news.

SISKIYOU COUNTY (CBS13) – Ice on the roadway triggered a massive 60-vehicle accident in freezing, foggy weather on Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County on Tuesday night.

Cal Fire confirmed the pileup took place on about a two-mile stretch of the northbound I-5 between Yreka and Hornbrook, just south of the Oregon border.
