NEW YORK (AP) — The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicked off in New York on Thursday, putting a festive mood in the air in a city still coping with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

November 22, 2012 – INDONESIA – Mount Lokon, one of the most active volcanos in Indonesia, erupted twice Wednesday morning. The eruptions from the volcano were less than one hour apart and were confirmed by the Mahawu Volcano Observation monitoring post chief, Farid Ruskanda Bina. An ash cloud was expelled 1200 meters into the air. Residents were warned to be on alert and observe the 2.5 mile exclusion zone established around the volcano.

Has France's Socialist President, Francois Hollande, just carried out an economic U-turn by reaching out to big business?

The question is the talking-point of Paris since the government announced its "competitiveness pact" a week ago.

A response to growing concerns about the decline of France's industrial base, the pact's main measure is a 20bn-euro (£16bn; $26bn) tax credit to the corporate sector.

What is the best cat video ever? We don't envy the judges who had to decide the answer to this complex question. After all, with so many adorable cats on YouTube, how could one possibly decide?

Somehow, however, the judges at  "The Friskies" -- a contest and awards show that celebrates YouTube cat-dom -- were able to make a final call, choosing an inspiring blind kitten as the top cat of them all.

When the copilot of a Lufthansa flight was struck with a debilitating migraine while mid-air on Monday, the crew could have used a doctor -- but what they got was a pilot.

Luckily, one brave passenger happened to work for North American Airlines, making him fully qualified to fly commercial aircraft.

"It was a miracle," a source involved in the operation told Independent.ie. "It had all the elements of a Hollywood movie but thankfully one with a happy ending."

14 year old Deepika Kurup has invented a water purification method to address the global problem of a lack of accessible drinking water.

What a great kid and an inspiration for many others.

Until you’ve witnessed the lack of easily accessible drinking water in person, it can be difficult to understand how big this issue really is for many people around the world.

Thankfully, 14 year old Deepika Kurup witnessed the problem, then focused on finding a solution. Where most of us who read the site live, we take clean drinking water for granted but that’s far from reality for many in poorer countries.

SPRING LAKE, N.J.  — The average New Jersey beach is 30 to 40 feet narrower after Superstorm Sandy, according to a survey that is sure to intensify a long-running debate on whether federal dollars should be used to replenish stretches of sand that only a fraction of U.S. taxpayers use.
