Hundreds of Israelis have demonstrated in Tel Aviv to protest against a possible military strike on Iran and demand the resignation of Israeli premier and minister for military affairs.

Carrying signs condemning any strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, the protesters gathered outside Minister for Military Affairs Ehud Barak’s residence on Sunday and called on him and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign, DPA reported.

The demonstrators accused the officials of acting belligerently and pushing for war with Iran, saying the consequences of such action would be dire.

BAMIYAN, Afghanistan — "It's there," says an archaeologist pointing to the ground, where fragments of a Buddha statue from the ancient Gandhara civilisation have been covered up to stop them being stolen or vandalised.

Just months before the US-led invasion in 2001, the Taliban regime shocked the world by destroying two giant, 1,500-year-old Buddhas in the rocky Bamiyan valley, branding them un-Islamic.

In a sign of the severity of this summer’s record heat, one of the two reactors at Connecticut’s only nuclear power plant has been shut down due to historically high water temperatures in Long Island Sound, source of the facility’s cooling water.

Unit 2 of Millstone Power Plant near New London was shut down Sunday afternoon after temperatures in the sound exceeded 75 degrees for 24 hours, the maximum temperature at which the nuclear power plant has permits to extract cooling water for the unit, said Ken Holt, spokesman for plant operator Dominion.

When Anthony Browne accepted the job of Chief Executive Officer of the British Bankers’ Association in June, it had responsibility for the world’s most important benchmark interest rate. Following the Libor-rigging scandal it is likely to be little more than just another lobby group.

Money is slipping through loopholes, tax havens

The Marietta Times

L. P. McGovern, August 14, 2012

Interesting headline recently in a British newspaper: "Wealth Doesn't Trickle Down - It Just Floods Offshore, Research Reveals." The article goes on to state that "$21 trillion in assets have been lost to global tax havens." 21 trillion. That's the number 21 followed by 12 zeroes.

Later in the story, it goes on to state that $21 trillion is probably an under-estimation, that the real figure is probably closer to $32 trillion. But, when you're successfully hiding your money from the tax man in places like Bermuda or the Cayman Islands, what's a trillion or so, more or less?

The wise man in the storm prays God, not for safety from danger, but for deliverance from fear." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A final problem that [humanity] must solve in order to survive in the world house that we have inherited is finding an alternative to war and human destruction. Recent events have vividly reminded us that nations are not reducing but rather increasing their arsenals of weapons of mass destruction. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. A so-called limited war will leave little more than a calamitous legacy of human suffering, political turmoil and spiritual disillusionment. A world war will leave only smoldering ashes as mute testimony of a human race whose folly led inexorably to ultimate death". - Dr Martin Luther King 1967 - click here for a PDF of the complete text of 'the World House Essay' - a remarkably succinct assessment of our predicament. WASHINGTON — After deciding not to prosecute Goldman Sachs for its conduct during the financial crisis, the Justice Department did something rare: it publicly announced that the investigation was closed.

The unusual public announcement came after Goldman’s lawyers pushed for a notification that the bank would not be charged, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Why Does Monsanto Always Win?

Rain's picture

World Truth

If you’ve ever wondered how Monsanto―a company that admits it wants to own the world’s food supply through its patented genetically engineered seeds―gets away with not having to label its products, all you have to do is follow the trail of money leading from their coffers into the pockets and campaign funds of well-placed politicians and regulators.

According to OpenSecrets.org, Monsanto basically lives at the doorsteps of legislators in Washington, where it spent $5.3 million last year lobbying the nation’s lawmakers, and has already spent $1.4 million in the first three months of this year.

2012 The Big Picture

Prescription Drugs

In the wake of shocking reports on how the FDA, terrified of being outed for its questionable practices, spied on its own employees in the hopes of rooting them out before they could become whistleblowers, a new story has emerged on how deep the deceit goes. From marginalizing safety reports to not reading them at all―and then going ahead and approving the drugs in question―the FDA once more stands accused of being little more than a rubber-stamping agency for Big Pharma.
