Some movies are made to touch our heart and soul with an overabundance of sentiment. They make us come in touch with our humanity and empathy. And some films are made to touch our mind, to get our mental cogs working, to awaken and expand our consciousness. They are films that deal with questions that we are all too eager and too afraid to ponder. It is those films that signal our awakening, and that push us into seeing life and our existence differently.

1. Waking Life, by Rickard Linklater

What is a dream, and what is reality? Can we actually distinguish between the two? And what does a dream mean? These are only a few sample questions of the wide range that Linklater’s film provides. The protagonist wanders through moments, dialogues, unnamed characters-in some important scenes, he’s not even present. In another, we see a couple from another movie verse (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy from the popular romantic movie franchise “Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight“), with no explanation. It is a trippy movie.Moving from the ethereal to the real, questioning the validity of each aspect of existence, and ending up straight into an existential crisis,this movie will fill your mind with philosophical questions, the biggest one being:Is my life real?

The above quote comes from a speech given by Jim Carey that has been making its way around the internet for about a year now. You can listen to it here if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s quite the inspirational speech, and it has already touched the lives of millions of people around the world. Collective-Evolution is a big supporter of celebrities who use their fame to beam out positive and uplifting messages to the world and create awareness about issues that the mainstream media refuses to cover. Often, these celebrities are used as corporate billboards, and they are not happy. This was recently expressed by Lady Gaga; we covered that story and you can read/watch it here. Russell Brand has also been very outspoken over the past few years, and hopefully he and others are encouraging more people to do the same.

I love history, and I love mythology. This is why, on August 30, 2001, my wife and I named our first-born Isis, after the high goddess of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. The goddess Isis, whose origins stretch back, at the very least, 4500 years from the present, was worshipped as the ideal of motherhood, as a deity who cared for the plight of others, as one who would watch over travelers, and who was ‘Great of Magic’, being able to bring life to the dead.

Her influence was such that her worship continued for more than 3000 years, not only in Egyptian culture, but also by the high civilisations of the ancient Greeks and Romans as well.

Fast forward the better part of five millennia, and it has taken just three years for a loose assortment of low-life scumbags to co-opt that name of compassion, magic and power. For whatever reasons, a group with many names – including, in Arabic, ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī ‘l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām; in English Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and Islamic State (IS) – has become more popularly referred to simply as ‘ISIS’ (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), largely through mass media repetition and then reinforcement through discussions on social media.

You hear a lot of talk in our little community about being on a mission, but what exactly does that mean? Do the people who think they’re on a mission live or act differently than those who don’t?

Being on a mission means that we have a purpose for being on this planet, however we each define it, and we build our lives around that purpose in hopes of reaching others who also have something significant to give.

For me, having a mission means that I have work to do, and next to spending time with family, this work is the most important thing to me. Those who are on a mission are usually preoccupied with their work, and they’d rather discuss something that has to do with their mission than the cultural distractions we’ve come to accept as normal.

They hunger for authenticity, and the usual discussions about politics, television and other distractions don’t interest them. They’d rather discuss how we can move the planet forward, so they passionately commit to generating this kind of discussion and they invite others to contribute.
