Magnitude-2.0 quake shakes New Jersey

Some residents in northern New Jersey awoke to a small earthquake early Monday.

The temblor, with a magnitude of 2.0, struck at 1:19 a.m. and was centered in Ringwood, a community that's still dealing with downed trees and power outages from Sandy.

Mayon and Taal volcanoes on alert level 1

MANILA, Philippines - The Mayon and Taal volcanoes remain at alert level 1, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC) said on Sunday, November 4.
In its 8 a.m. bulletin, NDRRMC said that the alert level remains raised in both volcanoes after volcanic earthquakes were observed during the past 24 hours. One volcanic eartquake was observed in Mayon, while 5 were observed in Taal.

National Committee of Emergency declares seismic alert for Central Costa Rica

November 3, 2012 – COSTA RICA - Costa Ricans are on alert, which was declared by the National Committee of Emergency due to the seismic activity in the central region. The western province of Guanacaste and the Great Metropolitan Area are the most active regions and authorities are asking residents a continued vigilance. Although other movements must occur to catalog the situation, it is peculiar the succession of recent tremors in very short periods of time, said seismological network specialist of the University of Costa Rica, Lepold Linkimer.

 

At this time, experts analyze the phenomenon to determine if is related to Aguas Calientes tectonic fault, which caused one of the country’s most destructive earthquakes in the past century, said prensalibre.cr. During the last hours, the fault that goes through Escazu municipality has originated seven earthquakes between 2.2 and 3.1 degrees on the Richter scale, said the organization. –Costa Rica Star

Earthquake empties famed Haida Gwaii hot springs (with video)

The famed hot springs of Haida Gwaii have gone dry, apparently a casualty of last week's major earthquake.

Parks Canada officials at Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site said all four of the popular geothermal pools are empty.
