November 3, 2012 – INDONESIA – Volcanic activities on Mount Raung, located on the border of Banyuwangi and Jember, continued to rise on Monday. Hendra Gunawan, from the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center’s (PVMBG) said that since 10 a.m. tremors have been increasing in the region with the length of more than 32 millimeters. “It’s an over-scale earthquake,” Hendra told reporters on Monday, October 29.

In addition to the increasing tremors, the PVMBG has also received reports from Mount Ijen monitoring office, which reported black smoke spewing out of Mount Raung reaching up to 100 meters high. However, Hendra has urged residents not to panic and wait for announcements of further monitoring from the PVMBG. “But we must remain vigilant,” said Hendra. –Tempo Interactive

Yellowstone earthquake activity remains at background levels.

During October 2012, 128 earthquakes were recorded in the Yellowstone National Park region. The largest were a pair of magnitude 3.1 events on October 14 at 8:55 PM and 9:21 PM MDT, located about 18 miles south southwest of West Yellowstone, MT.
These events were part of a swarm of 55 quakes recorded October 14 -16, with magnitudes ranging from M 0.9 to M 3.1.

The swarm resumed briefly on October 26 with an additional 8 events, M 1.4 to M 2.3 located in the same area on the western edge of the Madison Plateau.
Slow subsidence of the caldera, which began in early 2010, continues. Current deformation patterns at Yellowstone are well within historical norms.

NEW YORK — Blame a very high tide driven by a full moon, the worst storm surge in nearly 200 years, and the placement of underground electrical equipment in flood-prone areas for the most extensive storm-related power outage in New York City's history.

It's like what happened at the Fukushima nuclear complex in Japan last year — without the radiation. At a Consolidated Edison substation in Manhattan's East Village, a gigantic wall of water defied elaborate planning and expectations, swamped underground electrical equipment, and left about 250,000 lower Manhattan customers without power.
