As Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast, especially New York City and New Jersey, we have to give a tip of the hat to everyone who did their part in making sure their neighbors, friends and family were safe and secure.

In New York City the first responders were on point, as their rescue efforts saved lives and got many out of harm's way. Police officer Artur Kasprzak, city medical staff, NYU's medical center and the mayors and governors who were on TV informing citizens every step of the way, all played a role in saving lives.

The Occupy movement received vindication from unlikely source tonight, as a senior executive at the Bank of England credited it with stirring a “reformation of finance”.

In a glowing appraisal of the movement’s achievements, Andrew Haldane, executive director of financial stability, said Occupy protesters had been “both loud and persuasive”, and had attracted public support because “they are right”.

UBS says under investigation in Singapore over possible rate manipulation

(Reuters) - UBS is under investigation in Singapore along with other banks for possible manipulation of Libor and other benchmark rates, the Swiss bank said on Tuesday.

In notes to its third quarter earnings report, UBS said that the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), as well as authorities in the United Kingdom, United States and Switzerland, are conducting investigations into whether it and other banks tried to manipulate rates.

Libor Complaint Prompts Paris Prosecutors to Open Inquiry

Paris prosecutors opened a preliminary inquiry over manipulation of the London interbank offered rates, or Libor, after a complaint by a Societe Generale SA (GLE) shareholder.

The July complaint, which didn’t name a target, claims that lenders engaged in market manipulation related to Libor, among other allegations, Frederik Karel Canoy, the investor’s lawyer, said today.

Barclays Libor case to go to trial

(Reuters) - Barclays became the first bank to be ordered to stand trial in a British court over damages stemming from manipulation of the Libor interest rate after a High Court ruling on Monday.

Guardian Care Homes, a residential care home operator based in Wolverhampton, is suing Barclays for up to 37 million pounds ($59 million) over the alleged mis-selling of interest rate hedging products known as swaps.

Vatileaks: ex-butler ‘accomplice’ faces trial

A Vatican computer technician will go on trial on November 5 on charges of helping the pope's former butler steal secret papers, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said on Tuesday.

Claudio Sciarpelletti's trial follows the conviction of ex-butler Paolo Gabriele, who was found guilty of stealing papers which revealed fraud scandals and intrigue at the heart of the Vatican, and sentenced to 18 months in jail.
