It seems the level of corruption at the hands of politicians and power hungry investors is no different in Canada than anywhere else in the world. Environment Canada has approved the commercial production of GM Atlantic salmon eggs which grow to market-size twice as fast as other farmed salmon. The biotech company responsible, Aquabounty, has revealed that it is no longer asking for approval to grow the fish in the US but plans to produce all of the GM salmon eggs in Canada and then sell “table-ready” GM salmon into the US consumer market. It is an alarming decision that sets Canada up to be the source of global environmental risk, says the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network.

Water Industry Admits Fracking Compromises UK’s Water Supply

fracking-6

Today, two industry groups signed a Memorandum of Understanding stating that their members will minimize the impact of onshore oil and gas development in the UK on the country’s water resources. The memorandum accompanies a report released by Water UK. The report concludes that ”where water is in short supply there may not be enough available from public water supplies or the environment to meet the requirements for hydraulic fracturing.”While the aim of the mutual agreement was to give the public greater confidence and reassurance that everything will be done to minimize the effects on water resources and the environment during fracking, some organizations are speaking out against agreement.

China Says No to GMO Corn

cornChina has recently rejected a large shipment of corn imported from the United States, due to the discovery of contamination by a strain of unapproved GMO corn.

The offender, Syngenta AG’s Agrisure Viptera corn, also known as MIR 162, has not received approval from the Chinese government in Beijing. This strain is specifically engineered for resistance against certain insects, and is common throughout the United States.

Fracking to blame? Texas rocked by 16 earthquakes in last 3 weeks

Northern Texas towns are experiencing an intense string of earthquakes – the last of which was one of the most powerful in 5 years. As unusual tremors have been going on for over 3 weeks now, many suspect fracking might be to blame.

On Thursday, the region experienced two tremors, with one of them registering 3.6 magnitude, 55 km west of the town of Azle at 07:58:36 GMT, as recorded by the US Geological Service, and the other 2.8 at 08:41:07 GMT, with the epicenter not far from the first one. USGS records show that the 3.6 tremor was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in 5 years. “It sounded like a sonic boom, and then the house started shaking,” Keith Krayer, a local resident who felt the effects of the quake, told RT. Krayer said he had no doubt the quake was sparked by fracking. “When they frack, they inject all that water and chemicals into the ground, then they pump it back up and separate the gas from the water, then they have to dispose of that water 13,000 feet down. It causes the plates to slip, the lubrication from the water.”

The unspoilt pastoral landscape of Transylvania is the latest battlefield in the war against aggressive fossil energy extraction. Jim Wickens reports on the farming communities fighting back against multinational energy companies.

In recent weeks the sleepy Saxon communities and protected forests of Sibiu county in Transylvania, have become an unlikely front for a new battleground, pitting gas exploration companies, the Romanian government and international investment firms, against a small band of environmental activists from across Romania, who are working side by side with local farmers to resist gas and oil exploration that they claim is taking place illegally on their land.

Barton Moss site

Anti-fracking protesters have attempted to stop a gas drilling rig arriving at Barton Moss in Greater Manchester. Police cleared the road to allow energy company IGas onto the site, between Barton Aerodrome and the M62. A man, aged 41, from the Glossop area was arrested on suspicion of obstructing police and the road, said a police spokesman. IGas confirmed plans to build a vertical test well at Barton Moss but said they have "no plans" for fracking.

Ellen Brown On the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership)

Monsanto and Gates Foundation Push Genetically Engineered Crops on Africa

“Control oil and you control nations,” said US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.  “Control food and you control the people.”

Global food control has nearly been achieved, by reducing seed diversity with GMO (genetically modified) seeds that are distributed by only a few transnational corporations. But this agenda has been implemented at grave cost to our health; and if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) passes, control over not just our food but our health, our environment and our financial system will be in the hands of transnational corporations.

'Herding' vaccine theory a complete hoax and failure

Silver's picture

By: S.D. Wells, 11/26/2013

There is a pandemic going on right now - it's called GMO food and GMO medicine. Don't let them fool you into following the "herd" over the health cliff. Dr. David Freed says: "It seems to me that the ethical background to vaccination - giving potentially harmful medications to healthy individuals in the hope of keeping them that way - has never been clearly addressed... Who gave us the right to invade the bodies of healthy people who never asked us to, and to do it not only without explanation of the possible risks, but in some countries even applying coercive pressures, denying the existence of the risks, and suppressing relevant information?"

Black Friday is key test for Walmart protesters

Silver's picture

By: Ned Resnikoff, 11/25/2013

Last year, when Walmart workers around the country staged a nationwide strike on the biggest shopping day of the year, the bar for success was relatively low. By throwing the world’s largest employer on the defensive and sending a message, organized labor was able to claim a tactical victory.

This Friday, expectations are higher. The workers and their allies need to show that they came out of the past year stronger than before. And that could be hard to achieve. Organizers insist the campaign will deliver. On a conference call last week, OUR (Organization United for Respect) Walmart told reporters to expect as many as 1,500 individual Black Friday protests across the country, a significant step up from last year’s estimated 1,200 events across 400 different stores.
