SUBSIDING CHANCE OF FLARES: Sunspot AR1598 has decayed since it unleashed an X1-class solar flare on Oct. 23rd. The daily odds of a similar eruption from the active region have dropped to only 5%, according to NOAA forecasters. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

A COMET IN TROUBLE? Amateur astronomers have been keeping a close eye on Comet 168P/Hergenrother since October 1st when it suddenly brightened 500-fold, from 15th to 8th magnitude. At the time, the comet was making its closest approach to the sun (1.4 AU). Some observers speculated that solar heating caused the fragile comet to break apart. On Oct. 26th, a group of astronomers found evidence to support this idea. "Using the Faulkes North (F65) telescope," writes Ernesto Guido et al., "we detected a fragmentation in Comet 168P."

Strong storms swept across the area overnight leaving a lot of damage. The stormy weather continued Thursday morning, downing trees and knocking out power across central Wisconsin.

Donald Pecor says this was the worst storm he's seen in 27 years. He says the winds were so strong in Rhinelander, he thought a tornado was coming.

Sandy: Major Impacts Expected in Northeast

Sandy continues to be a large and dangerous storm and poses a major threat to portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Residents from New England to New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia should begin to prepare for Sandy.

While Sandy is expected to spend much of this weekend as a high-end tropical storm rather than a full-fledged hurricane, in no way does this lessen the danger to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Nearly all computer model forecasts expect Sandy to strengthen again when it interacts with jet stream energy Sunday into Monday.

(Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy, a late-season Atlantic cyclone that threatens to be one of the worst storms to hit the Northeast in decades, slogged slowly northward on Friday after killing at least 41 people in the Caribbean.

Forecasters said wind damage, widespread and extended power outages and coastal and inland flooding were anticipated across a broad swath of the densely populated U.S. East Coast when Sandy comes ashore early next week.

Is Hurricane Sandy Divine Intervention in a Twisted Sort of Way?

Why it's NOT just another year…

Will Hurricane (Frankenstorm) Sandy preempt the election?  That’s a very real possibility from the sound of the meteorological predictions. Better batten down the hatches if you live on the east coast—that’s USA and Canada.

How bad is it? Reports out of the Caribbean say 22 have died as of today.

Will it make it easier or harder to execute The Plan?

We could be in for some very interesting times in the next couple of weeks, or even longer. Very interesting indeed.

Don’t panic, just be aware, take what precautions you can and know that it will all unfold as it’s meant to, for our best and highest good.

BRIDE, GROOM, AURORAS: Space weather can have a big influence on human affairs--and we're not just talking about radio blackouts and power outages. Last night, photographers Ronn Murray and Marketa Stanczykova were married under the Northern Lights in Alaska, and according to the groom, it was space weather that brought them together:

"Marketa Stanczykova and I met after a she looked me up from Iceland when she found this image on the cover of spaceweather.com 1 year and 21 days ago," explains Ronn. "We became friends on Facebook and after shooting auroras together in Alaska we fell in love. So, we gathered a small group of friends and headed up to the University of Alaska's Poker Flat Research Range where the aurora is studied. Last night we said 'I do' in front of the AuroraCam for all the world to see." (continued below)

Typical Late-Season Track:  "Recurve"

Plotted above are the latest computer model forecast plots for Sandy.

Typically by late October, tropical cyclones forming in the central or western Atlantic Ocean have a good chance of "recurving", or being caught up in the polar jet stream, and turning away from the U.S. mainland.  Those forming in the western Caribbean have a better chance of hitting the U.S. in late October, particularly Florida, as we saw 7 years ago with Hurricane Wilma.

Australia said Wednesday it was searching for a new aircraft landing site for planes supplying its three bases in Antarctica because the current runway is melting due to global warming.

Australia has three stations on the icy continent -- Casey, Davis and Mawson -- occupied by scientists and support staff, with the Wilkins runway, carved into glacial blue ice, a vital transport link.
